Sarah Edkins: Theatrical Scene Designer

Theatre Design

Sarah Edkins spent her formative years in the United Kingdom. Before earning her B.A. degree in fine art at the Falmouth School of Art in Cornwall, she worked as a puppeteer. She moved to San Francisco in 1980 to start her career in set design, working as a mural and house painter as well as a scenic artist. After designing her first solo shows there, she then moved to New York to attend Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and obtained a M.F.A degree in Theater Arts. In 1991, she was awarded an NEA Designers Fellowship. She has designed sets, mostly for experimental groups in the New York City area in many of the non-traditional performance spaces such as The Ohio Theater, The Kitchen, La Mama and Here.

She also works as a teaching artist at schools in NYC. She has ongoing work as an event designer and creates inter-active installations for The Scandinavia House and other venues. Her work is usually influenced by her painterly tendencies.
